An epic love saga

The film’s story is penned by Salman himself. It’s a story inspired by Nikolai Gogol’s book, ‘Taras Bulba’, and Salman penned it many years ago.

‘Veer’ is produced by Vijay Galani and directed by Anil Sharma of Gadar fame.

Synopsis

With so many “Universal Soldier” movies currently floating around out there, it can be a little confusing trying to get a handle on where all the various entries fit into the overall franchise. Just to be clear, John Hyams’ “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” is a direct sequel to Roland Emmerich’s 1992 movie. The film ignores the two “Universal Soldier” direct-to-DVD movies that have come before it, as well as 1999’s theatrical sequel “Universal Soldier: The Return”, which returned (no pun intended) Jean-Claude Van Damme in his original role. In “Regeneration”, Van Damme is once again back as Luc Deveraux, as is fellow original castmember Dolph Lundgren, here once again playing Deveraux’s undead (but very amusing) foil, Andrew Scott.

“Regeneration” is written by Victor Ostrovsky and directed by John Hyams, who in a bit of trivia is the son of Peter Hyams, a Hollywood mainstay that has directed Van Damme in two movies, “Timecop” and “Sudden Death”, two of the action star’s better movies. As the sequel opens, the Russian President’s daughter and son are abducted in a daring daylight raid by a band of Russian rebels led by an unnamed brute who, as it turns out, is the latest generation of the Universal Soldier program. The not-so super secret Government program has since been disbanded, we learn, but a rogue professor (Kerry Shale) thinks he sure would like the chance to create his own personal army of UniSol soldiers. To this end, he has teamed up with a Russian rebel commander who is using the skeletal remnants of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor as his base of operations, threatening to blow up the place’s apparently still dangerous reactors (along with the Russian Prez’s offsprings) if his demands are not met.

Although the DVD box art and press for the film hypes up “Regeneration’s” return to form with original stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren back once again, this isn’t really the case. While Deveraux (Van Damme) does get plenty of face time, for much of the film he’s far removed from the action, as his character attempts to “fit” back into society with the help of a kindly British scientist lass (Emily Joyce). Much of the film’s first hour focuses on the attempts by a joint American-Russian task force as they attempt to subdue the Russian rebels within their nuclear reactor hideout, led by the brash Captain Kevin Burke (Mike Pyle), while the rebels rebuff them with the hulking Andrei Arlovski, playing the new generation of UniSol tough guy. As for Scott, he doesn’t even make an appearance until almost the hour mark, and even then, Scott and Deveraux’s long-awaited grudge match takes up a scant 10 or so minutes of the entire film. Color me disappointed.

Nevertheless, credit must be given to Hyams, who signals right away that he’s trying to make a grittier, bloodier version of “Universal Soldier” with the film’s impressive opening action sequence. The movie tacks on a couple of respectable action moments, highlighted by a great running fight as Deveraux, finally reactivated and in fatigues again, takes on the entire rebel contingent by himself using everything from guns to a knife. Deveraux’s less-than-cordial reunion with Scott also makes up the film’s other highlight, as the two powerhouses fling each other through walls and pound away like two guys that really, really don’t like each other. Granted, the two actor’s stunt doubles also do plenty of work during their fight, but it’s pretty impressive how “all in” both Van Damme and Lundgren are still willing to go in their, er, senior years.

If you’re a fan of the first movie, I don’t think you’ll be too disappointed with “Regeneration”. Admittedly, the lack of Deveraux and Scott action in the film’s first hour is a bit surprising, as I kept waiting for the two originals to once again break bones and shoot up the joint, but had to keep waiting and waiting… Meanwhile, John Hyams fills out the cast with mixed-martial arts fighters like Arlovski, who makes for an imposing force. Of all the MMA guys, Pyle shows the most acting ability (aside from, you know, grunting and pounding people’s faces in with one’s fists), which probably explains why he gets the film’s most leading man-ish part without actually being, well, the leading man. Obviously with Hyams’ background in the world of MMA, a lot of the film’s action scenes are of the fisticuff variety, which Hyams shoots like he’s doing a UFC grudge match. It does feel a tad odd at times when the UniSol guys start throwing down like caged fighters, but you get used to it after a while. All in all, I must say that the MMA bruisers in “Regeneration” acquit themselves well.

I’ll be honest with you: I never saw the two direct-to-DVD sequels or “The Return”, so I won’t even try to compare “Regeneration” to them. As an entry in the “Universal Soldier” franchise, “Regeneration” is a worthy direct-to-DVD sequel. The film’s $14 million dollar budget has been put to good use, including a nice, chaotic car chase to open up the film, and plenty of explosions and gunplay throughout. Obviously I would have liked to see more of Deveraux and Scott renewing each other’s acquaintances (by that I mean I’d like to see them beat the heck out of each other more than just the one time), but “Regeneration’s” final 30 minutes is the type of slam-bang, balls-to-the-wall action moviemaking that’s easy to appreciate.

Outlander (2008) BRrip - 450MB

The premise of “Outlander” is a familiar one to fans of the Beowulf legend. An outsider comes to a kingdom besieged by a supernatural evil to kill it. In this case, Kainan (James Caviezel) brings the evil himself, crashing his spaceship into a Nordic lake and inadvertently releasing the stow-away monster to terrorize the nearby villages. The movie progresses through the development of character and plot, doing a good job of introducing the love interest, Freya (Sophia Myles), the rival and friend, Wulfric (Jack Huston), and King Rothgar (John Hurt).

The backstory of Kainan’s arrival is that he is a member of an imperializing civilization that invades planets, kills the life on them, and then plants colonies. One of the planets they cleansed was populated by Moorwens, a kind of dragon that is impossibly fast, powerful, and nearly invulnerable. Unfortunately, one of the Moorwens survives and exterminates the colony of women and children who were left behind by the men as they went on another raiding party. The parallel between the Viking culture and the alien raiding culture is clearly drawn and demonstrates that the desire for revenge on the part of Kainan against the Moorwen, and by Wulfric against Gunnar, are irrational responses to a culture of violence. Each must reject his past in his own way: Wulfric by changing his character and Kainan by escaping from his culture. How it benefits him to become part of an even more primitive, blood-thirsty civilization is unclear.

Alien Trespass is an exciting and entertaining homage to the great science-fiction movies of the 1950s, the post-war boom period when the country was filled with great hope and prosperity and, at the same time, lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation.

The story begins in 1957 in the star-filled skies above California's Mojave Desert. It is a special night for noted astronomer Ted Lewis (ERIC McCORMACK), who is preparing a special dinner for his beautiful, adoring wife Lana (JODY THOMPSON) to celebrate their wedding anniversary. In another part of town, Tammy (JENNI BAIRD), a waitress at the small local diner with big plans for the future, looks out her window and is excited to see a shooting star, which she takes as a good sign for her dreams.

But what Dr. Lewis and Tammy assume is a shooting star, is really an alien spaceship. The fiery ball hurtles toward earth and crash-lands on a butte in the desert. The only witnesses are Dick (ANDREW DUNBAR) and Penny (SARAH SMYTH) who are necking in a nearby lovers' lane.

A tall, metallic alien named Urp emerges from the craft unharmed, alarmed to discover that the monstrous Ghota, who was also on board, has escaped. The menacing one-eyed creature's unquenchable appetite could mean the end of civilization as we know it.

Urp is the only one who knows how to stop the hideous extra-terrestrial, but to do so he has to take over the body of Dr. Lewis and enlist the aid of Tammy, the only human in town willing to believe and trust in his mission. The local police - including police Chief Dawson (DAN LAURIA) and officer Vernon (ROBERT PATRICK) - are confirmed skeptics and offer little help. Together, Urp and Tammy must hunt down the Ghota and neutralize it before it consumes all the local inhabitants and uses the human fuel to multiply and conquer the world!

Alien Trespass stars Eric McCormack, Jenni Baird, Dan Lauria and Robert Patrick. The co-stars are Jody Thompson, Aaron Brooks, Sarah Smyth, Andrew Dunbar, Tom McBeath, Vincent Gale, Jerry Wasserman, Jonathan Young and Michael Roberds.

The Canyon [2009] DVDRip [350MB]

The Canyon is a tricky little beast. At first glance, it looks like a cheap indie slasher flick on par with Turistas or the recent A Perfect Getaway. It sets its audience up for a grizzly, old fashion “killer in the Canyon” romp. But it’s not that at all. And I doubt, despite its much-coveted Halloween release date, that you could even call it a horror movie. It’s the exact opposite of Couples Retreat, and gives any recent bad vacation you might have had a run for its money. Swift, tight, and packed with horrifying real life thrills, The Canyon delivers on the promise Chris Kentis’ Open Water failed to see through more than six years ago.

Richard Harrah’s film is the latest to crack open this unique thriller sub-genre, which pits an average married couple (meaning they love each other, but they certainly have some issues) against the elements of the wild. Like Open Water, it has a 70s vibe flinting sparks against a 90s aesthetic. Kentis’ film gave us newlyweds who drifted far away from their boat while scuba diving in the Caribbean. It was positioned as the adrenaline thrill-ride of 2003. While it was unnerving and well made, it never quite brought us to the edge of our seats as advertised. Those bickering newlyweds swam around in a shark-infested circle for eighty minutes before being eaten. End of story. The Canyon goes for the same exact same narrative loop, but has more to play with. Instead of sharks, we get wolves. And instead of drowning, we get our protagonists falling from great distances while trying to catch a cell phone signal.

Thus, without letting our admiration for James Cameron come in the way of our verdict on ‘Avatar’, with a heavy heart, we’ll have to say that we found Cameron’s highly anticipated, expensive motion picture ‘Avatar’ not living up to our expectations.

Many who have seen the film have an opinion that since so much time (10 years), effort and sweat has gone into creating stereoscopic 3D effects for the film, and combining live and computer animation, one ought to appreciate it. True as it might be, at the end of the day, if a film fails to establish an emotional connect with the audiences, no effects whatsoever can salvage it or make it special.

Coming to the story, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is an ex-marine who is forced into participating in Avatar program. The program is setup by humans and comprises of encroaching a distant moon Pandora as it has an abundance of precious minerals on its land. However, getting hold of Pandora won’t be easy as humans can’t breathe on it. Also, the warrior Na’vi tribe resides in it.

In order to encroach Pandora’s land, one has to be able to breathe its air and thus become one of the Na’vis. Scientists thus create these genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars have a Na-vi body and a human DNA. Jake becomes one such Avatar...human kind’s weapon to make truce with Na’vis and thus force them to evacuate their planet. As Jake starts shuttling between his human and Na’vi body, he starts getting emotionally attached to Pandora and there begins the conflict between his medium of existence.

Avatar begins well but goofs up as it progresses. The story which seems promising initially starts faltering the moment Cameron shows Jake fall in love with a Na’vi woman. The film then on becomes just another clichéd love story where a hero will save his lover and her people from the villains. The villains happen to be humans here who now want to wage a war on the Na’vis as they refuse to give in to their demands. Jake even readies himself to battle it out with the humans to save his Na’vi tribe... things people do for love! If the love wasn’t clichéd enough, Cameron even makes his hero single out the lead villain and engage him in a one-to-one fist fight with him!

Avatar begins well, drags tremendously in between and then picks up on its pace towards the climax, but its too late by then. Titanic oozed romance and we loved it but the setting of Avatar didn’t require romance as its prime ingredient. This wrong move of Cameron transforms a sci-fi ‘Avatar’ into a highly clichéd run-of-the-mill dramatic love story set against a war backdrop.

The film is a visual delight, but lacks an original plot. This visual treat doesn’t make up for the weak storyline. The infusion of human trauma in an idyllic fantasy setting doesn’t seem to be a good idea! Avatar loses direction somewhere along the way, and its huge length plays spoil sport too.

Performances are decent, but not outstanding. Unfortunately, so is the film! However, ‘decent’ is not what one expects from a James Cameron.
